Our voices sound similar, our natural register alike. I shift mine to a whispering tone, you raise yours as you tell me about paying excessively for your parking. You play the part of an angry customer and I am a civilised and reasonable manager. I tug at a loose thread on my skirt and watch as it escapes from tiny holes on the hem. Afterwards, I conclude the exchange and I walk you to the door. I think I stand too close. When I see you in Benetton later that day, you avoid me, playing another part. Shopper. Actress. Stranger.
